Greetings

The President of the Society for Bioacoustics: Takuma Takanashi

As of October 2025, I assumed the position of President of the Society for Bioacoustics, succeeding former president Ikuo Matsuo. Together with six trustees, one inspector, I will perform activities to develop the society. I deeply appreciate your continued support and cooperation.

Bioacoustics is an interdisciplinary field of Biology and Acoustics, including Physiology, Physics and Engineering of sounds and vibrations. It covers a wide range of terrestrial and aquatic organisms: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects and plants.

Since its foundation in 2014, 12 annual meetings of the society have been held in Japan. These meetings featured presentations and discussions in English, and awards were granted to excellent presentations by students and young researchers. The 13th meeting will be held at Fukushima University (Chair: Takuma Takanashi) on October 29-30, 2026. You are cordially invited to the meeting.

Next, we released the Encyclopedia of Bioacoustics in Japanese (Asakura Publishing Co., Ltd.) in 2019. In 2023, Acoustic Communication in Animals: From Insect Wingbeats to Human Music (Bioacoustics Series Vol. 1, Springer, edited by Yoshimasa Seki) was published. In addition to the annual meetings, we also plan to arrange symposia to further promote the field.

Finally, we will continue to share information about our activities and enhance communication among members. I look forward to your participation in and support of the Society.
